Tukwila Library: Finalist for 2018 Sustainability Award

Tukwila Library 2018 Sustainability Award Finalist

Washington state's King County Public Library System was nominated by Sustainable Seattle, a local conservation organization as a finalist for the 2018 Sustainability Leadership Award. Nominated in the “Built Environment: Innovative Projects" category, the Tukwila Library received this honor as a recognition of the building's "green" design and functionality.

A Perkins & Will design, the building incorporates many "green" features including locally sourced wood for much of the interior, a roof made from "cross-laminated" timber supporting heat and drought tolerant native plants. All of these elements enable the structure to have a low carbon footprint. Sustainable Seattle's "Built Environment" category consists of the following pillars:"a conscious impact in waste, energy, storm water, water quality and materials."

The fully engineered Terra5 terracotta rainscreen incorporates an ECO Cladding attachment system which creates the "c.i. sub-framing layer" and contributes to the building's desired U-Value. The contrasting grey tones of Cladding Corp Terra5 panels complement the zinc cladding, aluminum sunshades and colorful glass elements that make up the building's exterior.
